IPMAT (Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test) is the entrance exam for the 5-year integrated BBA + MBA programme at IIM Indore (IPMAT Indore) and IIM Rohtak (IPMAT Rohtak). These are among the most competitive undergraduate programmes in India — IIM Indore admits ~150 students from 30,000+ applicants. Students sit IPMAT right after Class 12.
Structure varies by institute. IPMAT Indore: 3 sections — Quantitative Ability (MCQ, 30 Q, 40 min), Quantitative Ability (Short Answer type, 15 Q, 40 min), Verbal Ability (40 Q, 40 min). Total 85 questions in 2 hours. IPMAT Rohtak: 4 sections — Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Logical Reasoning (no QA-SA). Quantitative Ability is Class 9-12 level — arithmetic (percentages, ratios, profit-loss, time-speed-distance, averages, mixtures), algebra (linear and quadratic equations, progressions, logarithms, set theory), geometry (triangles, circles, mensuration, coordinate geometry, trigonometry), and modern math (permutations/combinations, probability, data interpretation). Depth is similar to CBSE Class 10-11 but SPEED is the differentiator — you have roughly 80 seconds per QA MCQ and 160 seconds per QA-SA.
Verbal Ability is reading comprehension plus vocabulary, sentence completion, para-jumbles, and grammar. Logical Reasoning (IIM Rohtak only) is arrangements, sequences, puzzles, syllogisms.
The winning IPMAT strategy for QA: (1) master speed techniques — percent-to-fraction conversions, shortcut formulas (like the sum of first n squares), and Vedic maths multiplication; (2) don't waste time on the hardest 2-3 questions — the cutoff is usually 60-65% of maximum, so maximise easy/medium questions first; (3) for QA-SA (no negative marking), attempt EVERY question, even guessing; (4) build mental arithmetic — the IPMAT doesn't allow calculators.
