A worked Year 5 fractions-of-a-quantity problem
Below is one fully worked example plus a short primer so you can see exactly how our AI reasons through a problem.
Example Problem
DEMO- 1
Find how many stickers go to Ben
Divide 24 by 3. This is the 'fraction of a quantity' skill taught in Year 4–5.
- 2
Subtract to find what Sam has left
- 3
Write the answer with the units from the question
Sam has 16 stickers left. Always re-read the question to check the units — NAPLAN sometimes asks for the fraction given away (8) instead of what's left (16), and students get tricked.

NAPLAN Numeracy strategy — reading carefully wins most of the points
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy) is the Australian national testing program for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. The Numeracy test is the focus of this solver — a single online test taken annually in March, aligned with the Australian Curriculum (ACARA). Results are used by schools, parents, and ACARA to benchmark student progress and school performance, NOT to admit students to specific schools (unlike state selective tests).
Test structure: each year level has its own Numeracy paper. Year 3 and 5 have ONE paper (calculator NOT allowed). Year 7 and 9 have TWO sections — a calculator-allowed section and a calculator-NOT-allowed section. Number of questions ranges from ~35 (Year 3) to ~50 (Year 9). The test is adaptive — harder or easier questions are served based on earlier performance, so students effectively take a version calibrated to their level.
Content by year: Year 3 focuses on basic operations with whole numbers, simple fractions (halves, quarters), money, time, length, 2D shapes, simple patterns. Year 5 adds decimal and fraction arithmetic, percentage intuition, area and perimeter, angles, chance and data. Year 7 adds integers (including negatives), rates, ratios, coordinate geometry, algebraic expressions, basic linear equations. Year 9 adds Pythagoras, trigonometry of right triangles, linear graphs and simultaneous equations (by inspection, substitution or graph), percentage change, simple probability problems.
Strategy matters. NAPLAN rewards students who: (1) read the whole question carefully — many questions contain 'extra' numbers or information; (2) estimate before calculating — if your answer doesn't match your estimate, you've likely made an error; (3) check the units in the answer (dollars, minutes, metres); (4) use the on-screen tools deliberately — online NAPLAN provides a protractor, ruler, and (in the calculator sections) a calculator. Students who ignore these tools lose points on geometry and measurement questions.
The solver above identifies the year level from the question's complexity, applies the ACARA-aligned method (the approach the student's teacher uses), and flags where on-screen tools would be useful during the actual test. Parents especially find it helpful for understanding 'how it's being taught today', which often differs from how they learned the same skill decades ago.

Frequently asked questions
Which NAPLAN year levels does the solver cover?+
All four — Year 3, Year 5, Year 7, and Year 9. The solver detects which level the question is aimed at (based on difficulty and topic) and uses methods aligned with the ACARA Year level.
Does it support the calculator and non-calculator sections?+
Yes. For Year 7 and 9 non-calculator sections, the solver uses mental arithmetic and pencil-and-paper methods. For the calculator section, it shows the method and the calculator keystrokes for a typical Year 7-9 scientific calculator.
Is the solver ACARA-aligned?+
Yes. ACARA's Mathematics curriculum defines the skills each year level assesses; the solver applies those same methods. For parents who learned maths in a different era, the solver's 'current method' often looks different from what they recall — that's intentional.
How is NAPLAN different from selective-school tests?+
NAPLAN is a BENCHMARKING test — it tracks whether students are meeting year-level expectations, not selecting top performers. Selective-school tests (NSW Selective, Victorian scholarship tests, ACER) are separate, much harder, and test aptitude. Don't substitute NAPLAN prep for selective-test prep.
Can I use it for NAPLAN online adaptive practice?+
Yes — NAPLAN went online nationally in 2022-23 with adaptive testing. The solver handles the content; the adaptive experience can only be simulated with official practice tests. Use both — solver for content, practice tests for exam feel.
Does it help if my child struggles with reading comprehension?+
The solver shows how to break a worded question into its parts (what's being asked, what numbers matter, what operation is needed). This comprehension-first approach directly helps students who understand the maths but get tripped up by the language.
Is it free for Australian families?+
Yes. One guest solve per day without signup; a free account gives 5 daily solves plus year-level quizzes, skill flashcards and a 4-week prep planner. Step-by-step working is never paywalled.
What if my child is in Year 4, 6, 8, or 10 — is practice still useful?+
Yes — those in-between years are the best time to practice, especially using the next NAPLAN year's content (so Year 4 practices some Year 5 content, Year 8 practises Year 9, etc.). The solver handles any year level.
