About Linear Equations

A linear equation in the form y = mx + b produces a straight line. The slope m tells you how steep the line is: a larger |m| means a steeper line. Positive m = line goes up left to right. Negative m = line goes down.

The y-intercept b is where the line crosses the y-axis (x = 0). The x-intercept is where y = 0 — solve 0 = mx + b → x = -b/m.

On the SAT, linear equation graphs test slope identification, parallel and perpendicular lines, and system of equations. On JEE Main, straight lines cover distance from a point, angle between lines, and family of lines.
