About Trigonometric Graphs

Trigonometric functions are periodic — they repeat the same pattern. The general form y = A sin(Bx + C) + D has:

  • Amplitude |A| — height of the wave above/below the midline
  • Period 2Ī€/B — length of one complete cycle
  • Phase shift -C/B — horizontal shift left or right
  • Vertical shift D — moves the entire wave up or down

cos(x) = sin(x + Ī€/2) — cosine is just sine shifted left by 90°. Tangent has vertical asymptotes at x = Ī€/2 + nĪ€ where the function is undefined.

Trig graphs are tested on SAT Math 2, JEE Main(trigonometry chapter, amplitude and period), and CBSE Class 11(Chapter 3: Trigonometric Functions).
